Current Research

Overall objective of my current research is to work on critical applications, exploiting ubiquitous technology and guiding the research objectives with experiences from field deployments.

Since joining the Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing Group at IIIT Delhi, while I have explored opportunities in sensing and mobile computing for several application domains such as Healthcare, Agriculture (wherein we provided consulting services for voice based services to farmers) and Building utility (energy/water) management. The current focus is primarily on Healthcare and Building energy management as explained below.

Building Utility Monitoring

  • Detailed instrumentation on IIITD campus - We now have more than 200 smart meters, each collecting approx. 10 electrical parameters every 30 seconds (amounting to more than 5 million data points collected every day). We have also instrumented some ambient (motion, temperature and light) sensors throughout the campus. Further we have integrated with our commercial BMS system to collect data from our HVAC system as well. You can see some of the applications built on top of smart metering deployment at http://energy.iiitd.edu.in/
  • Home deployments: We have also instrumented several homes with smart meters. In one of the homes, we did a very extensive sensing deployment for which we have released the dataset as well (with some very unique aspects specific to Indian context). More details are available at http://energy.iiitd.edu.in:5000/
  • There are several research directions that we are pursuing right now - combining mobile phone data with smart meter data, NILM and development of analytics framework for building energy sensing and control applications.
  • Put in necessary conduit and box infrastructure in the new campus of IIIT Delhi across more than 300 rooms for installation of sensors and sensing systems.

Healthcare

  • Current interest in integrating different sub-systems in operation within the hospitals with public health information systems operational at the state level. To this effect, working with HISP India on integrating OpenMRS based hospital systems across all district hospitals with state level DHIS2 based system deployed for collected data for several public health programs.
  • Developed multiple application modules in OpenMRS that are currently deployed across multiple hospitals in Himachal Pradesh
  • In 2010-11, we developed a mobile based application for early detection of Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD) based on Sana framework. We worked with Electronic Health Point to deploy this application in rural areas of Bhatinda district. Interesting inferences from the collected data were published in ICTD 2012.
