Biography

Shobha Sundar Ram received her B.Tech. degree in electronic and communication engineering from University of Madras in 2004, and her M.S and Ph.D degrees in electrical engineering from University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas, USA in 2006 and 2009, respectively. She worked for 3 years as a research and development electrical engieer for Baker Hughes Inc, in Houston, Texas, USA. She joined the faculty of Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, New Delhi in January 2013.

Dr. Ram's principal areas of research are in the conceptualization, modeling, design and development of electromagnetic sensors. During her graduate studies, she focused on developing a complete end-to-end radar simulator to model dynamic human motions in non-line-of-sight environments. The simulator modeled radar parameters such as frequency, bandwidth and position, propagation channels as well as dynamic human motions. In order to test the simulator, she worked with collaborators on developing a low-cost Doppler radar prototype for detecting humans in both line-of-sight environments as well as non-line-of-sight environments such as through building walls. Her work comprized computational electromagnetic modeling of propagation environment, primitive based modeling of human radar returns, radar signal processing techniques on the radar data, system level hardware design and development and antenna design. Her work has been published in several journal publications such as IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing,Electronic Letters and IEEE Antennas and Wave Propagation. She has actively participated in several conferences such as IEEE Radar Conference and IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. She won the best paper award at the student paper competition for two consecutive years at the IEEE Radar Conference in Rome, Italy in 2008 and in San Diego, USA in 2009. She was awarded the Continuing Fellowship by the University of Texas at Austin for the academic year 2008-2009 for outstanding academic and research achievements.

During her stint as an RD Electrical Engineer at Baker Hughes Inc, Dr. Ram worked with collaborators in the conceptualization, modeling, design and testing of low frequency (below 500KHz) narrow and broadband magnetic loops for sensing formation resistivity for hydrocarbon exploration. She has concurrently worked in other areas such as piezoelectric transducer design, RF, analog and mixed signal circuit design and embedded programming.
